The Low Cost Key to Motion Perception
FlyThisSim® takes great care to provide simulators with excellent visual systems so that motion perception is provided without the use of expensive components like motion platforms. We design our visual systems with cognisance of what is required of a visual system in both the content and display of a scene. Our visual systems displays are bright and large, our visual processing systems fast and smooth rendering dense, rich and plausible 3D content. The better the visual system the more convincing the simulation, the better the skills training transfer and the easier the simulator is to ‘fly'.
Motion perception is knowing your location and orientation in space and inferring the speed and direction of elements in a scene based on visual, vestibular and other inputs. Visual perception of movement accounts for more than 85% of the motion cues interpreted by the brain easily overriding the other inputs. Visual stimulation required for good motion perception requires a special understanding of the elements required, particularly studies have shown that peripheral vision contributes strongly to the effect.
FlyThisSim® Visual Simulations have the following characteristics:
Visual Acuity is measured as the angle subtended by the human eye. For well-lit objects directly in front of the eye, it is about 1 minute of arc or 1/60th of a degree (arcminute). Note that 20/20 vision corresponds to recognizing letters that are 5 minutes of arc. FlyThisSim® Visual systems are in the order of 1 to 2 arc minutes.
Humans have a peak sensitivity to time varying illumination at between 10 Hz to 25 Hz, with the frequency increasing with luminance. The frequency at which perceived flicker disappears (the critical flicker fusion frequency) is between 15 Hz to 50 Hz, increasing with brightness and field of view. FlyThisSim® visual systems are frame locked at 60Hz.
Field of View
Each eye has a horizontal field of view (FOV) of 150 degrees (60 toward the nose and 90 to the side), together providing 180 degrees FOV, and a vertical FOV of 120 (50 up and 70 down). The FAA simulator standard is 75 horizontal and 30 vertical FOV. The FlyThisSim® TouchTrainer® can be fitted with a wide range of visual systems from the partial visual scene in the TouchTrainer® SD used for instrument training to our TouchTrainer® FM 6 screen 210 * 70 FOV visual system used for ab initio flying control skills training.
Good simulator visual systems require a continuous horizon regardless of frame rate, roll rate, or distance between the screen video presentation areas. FlyThisSim® has integrated proprietary window positioning software that accounts for the distance between each of the visible areas providing the effect of a continuous horizon when the aircraft is at any roll angle.
The visual system 3D content and image based detail include man-made ground structures, roads, railways, houses, commercial structures, and aviation obstacles that are realistic and properly derived from geographical information systems and sources such as USGS databases. 3D terrain is derived from high resolution Digital Elevation Maps (DEM). Natural features such as land use, coastline, rivers and lakes are also derived from real world mapping data. These elements brought together provide a very plausible visual representation of the ground you fly over for training using real world mission rehearsal, pilotage, map reading and dead reckoning.
The FlyThisSim® visual system continues to deliver a real world experience to pilots moving automobiles, trucks, trains, other aircraft, boats, animated lighting of man-made objects and correct airfield lighting.
Real-time Changing Weather
Real time and simulated dynamic weather. Changing weather can be downloaded from real time aviation sources or set to exact parameters for training in known conditions. The weather is so realistic, and the visuals are so beautiful, you will learn how to handle visual cues quickly and accurately and maybe even enjoy a beautiful evening flight with a setting sun against a cirrus cloud backdrop!
